Christ Church Drops Series

St. Matthews UMC beat home-standing Christ Church two games to one.  St. Matthews improved  their season record against CCUM to 5-1.

St. Matthews put Game One away early.  In the first inning, three straight one out hits produced two runs.  And in the second, six straight hits- a homer, three singles, a triple and a final single- plated five runs and a 7-0 lead which was stretched to 8-0 in the third.  CCUM's first hit was a Mike Peak single in the fourth.  In the fifth, David Stierle singled, Paul Hirsbrunner tripled and Frank Preston doubled for two runs.  In the ninth, trailing by six, CCUM loaded the bases on singles by Mike P., David and Paul but all were stranded and the final score in St. Matthew's win was 8-2.

In game Two, St. Matthews again started fast with a run in the first.  CCUM tied the game in the fourth when Jerry Hinton tripled and David singled.  St. Matthews retook the lead with another run in the fifth.  CCUM took their first lead of the night in the sixth.  With one out, Jerry tripled, David singled and Mike Thompson homered for a 4-2 CCUM advantage.  In the eighth Mike P. singled and David tripled as CCUM evened the night with a final score win 5-2.  David added another single and Dick had a triple.

St. Matthews Baptist Takes Series

A four run Game Three first inning propelled home standing St. Matthews Baptist to a 2-1 series win Monday night.

Christ Church could manage only one run in Game One.  When David Stierle was stranded after his two out single, St. Matthews homered to rake a 1-0 lead.  Christ Church tied the game in the top of the second when Jenny Peak's two out triple scored Dick Lutz who singled leading off the inning.  But St. Matthews added a second inning solo home run and a fourth inning two run homer for a 4-1 final score.  Christ wasted Dick's fourth inning single, Mike Peak's eighth inning single and singles by Dick and Bob Stone in the ninth

Christ Church mounted a thirteen hit attack in Game Two.  Mike P. led off with a single but died at first.  In the second David singled and Bob tripled for a 1-0 lead.  Mike Thompson's double in the third was wasted, but in the fourth, David singled and went to second on Frank Preston's error and scored on Terry Waddle's double.  Christ made it 4-0 in the fourth.  Jerry Hinton singled, David tripled and Bob singled for two runs.  A two run St. Matthews' fifth cut the lead to 4-2.  Christ got a run back in the sixth on Terry's error and Jerry's triple.  Mike P. added a single, Dick a pair of singles and Bob a sacrifice in the 5-2 victory.

In Game Three, Jerry's one out triple was wasted before St. Matthews tallied their four.  David's single and Bob's triple cut the lead to 4-1 but St. Matthews made it 6-1 with a pair of fourth inning homers.  Christ clawed back.  In the fifth, Jenny singled and scored on Terry's home run  but Mike P. was left at first after a one out single.  Bob homered in the sixth to draw within two at 6-4. In the ninth with no outs, David singled and Bob tripled to cut the laed to one, but the threat ended there and St. Matthews won the game and the series.

CHRIST CHURCH SWEEPS

Christ Church swept Immanuel UCC Monday night to improve to 16 -14 on the season.  It was CCUM's fourth straight series win and their first sweep of the season.

After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning of Game One, a two run sixth inning and an eighth inning run gave CCUM a 3-1 win.  David Stierle led off with a single but was stranded there.  That was CCUM's only hit until the sixth.  With one out, Frank Preston reached on an error.  After a second out, Dick Lutz tied the game by driving in Frank with a triple.  CCUM took the lead a batter later when Mike Thompson scored Dick with a single.  The last run was scored on David's home run in the eighth.  CCUM out-hit Immanuel 4-3 and CCUM was able to score their one error.

CCUM never trailed in Game Two.  David again led off the game with a single but this time scored when Mike Peak hit a two out triple.  The lead increased to 3-0 on a one out single by David and a two out home run by Mike T.  CCUM added two more hits (a single by Mike P. and a double by Frank) for a total of six but no more runs.  But Immanuel could muster only three hits and no runs.

CCUM also led all the way in Game Three after scoring single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings.  Immanuel could manage only to score one run, that coming in the eighth.  In the third, Jenny Peak led off with a single and scored two outs later when David tripled.  The run in the fourth came on Mike P.'s triple and a two out double by Bob Stone.  Terry Waddle homered to lead off the fifth as did Mike T. in the sixth and Dick in the eighth.  Mike P. added a sixth inning single and Kay Peak reached on an error in the eighth.

Christ Church Wins Series

In the closest three game series of the season, Christ Church won in extra innings twice to pull out a 2-1 series win at Crescent Hill Baptist Church Monday night.  All three games saw the winning run scored in the last inning.

In Game One, with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, Tom Sherwood's home run gave Crescent Hill the victory.  Christ Church started fast with two runs in the first on a single by Dick Lutz, a triple by David Stierle and a double by Bob Stone.  With the score at 2-1, Christ Church added two in the sixth on back-to-back homers by Mike Thompson and Paul Hirsbrunner.  A solo home run and a two run homer in the Crescent Hill half of the eighth inning tied the score at four.  Christ wasted a one out single by David Stierle in the third; a two out single by Jenny Peak in the seventh; and, in the eighth, a lead-off single by David and an error by Mike T.; setting up Crescent Hill's walk-off win.

Game Two also came down to the last inning, but this time it was the twelfth inning.  With a 2-2 tie Kay Peak homered  with one out to give Christ Church the lead and David added an insurance run with a homer.  Christ Church out hit Crescent Hill twelve to four.  Christ led 1-0 after scoring a run in the sixth on a lead off single by Dick Lutz and a two out triple by Mike Peak.  In the ninth, Christ made it 2-0 on Mike P's single and Paul's triple.  But a two run homer in the bottom of the inning sent the game into extra innings.  A one out single by Dick in the tenth and a lead-off single by Mike P in the eleventh produced nothing.  But in the twelfth with one out, Kay Peak homered and, one out later, David homered for a 4-2 win.  Dick had three hits, adding a triple in the third.  David  added a single in the eighth;  Mike P. had five hits in the game including singles in the second and fourth.

Game Three completed the extra inning series win for Christ Church.    Christ went into the ninth trailing 1-0.  David singled in the first and sixth but was stranded.  Bob doubled in the second and seventh but was left on.  Dick singled in the third but died at first.  Paul singled in the fourth but got no further.  In the sixth, Crescent Hill homered for the 1-0 lead which they carried into the ninth.  In the ninth, with one out, and down by that run, Paul homered to tie the score.  A scoreless bottom of the ninth sent the game to extra innings.  Kay's one out double did not produce a run in the tenth  But in the eleventh Mike P. hit a home run with one out.  A chance to increase the lead was missed when Bob's third double of the game came to nothing.  But Mike's home run held up for a 2-1 win
