SLIDE CONTINUES

A recent trend continued Monday night at St. Matthews UMC  as Christ Church scored only six runs in dropping all three games.

St. Matthews opened Game One with a two run first inning on a single by Glenn, a triple by Carl and another single by Jim.  The lead became 5-0 in the fourth on a two run home run by Herb after a single by Ray and a single and triple by Frank and Glenn.  In the fifth a single by Frank Preston and a triple by Mike Thompson scored a run for Christ Church.  But St. matthews restored the lead to five as Jim and ray singled and tripled.  Mike Peak (single), David Stierle (triple and single), Leah Bennett (single) and Mike T. (single) added non-run scoring hits.  The Final - St. Matthews UMC 6 - Christ Church 1.

Glenn, Carl and Jim repeated their first inning production from game one in the first inning of Game Two to give St. Matthews the early lead.  Christ Church sliced the lead in half in the second on a single by David and a triple by Dick Lutz.  A fifth inning home run by Ralph closed the scoring for the game.  Jerry Hinton, Tom Bennett, David (2), and Dick added singles.  The Final - St. Matthews UMC 3 - Christ Church 1.

A three run first inning started things off on the right foot in Game Three.  Jerry led off with a single, Tom followed with a triple to score Jerry and he scored on a single by Mike P.  The score was increased to 4-0 on a triple by David.  But St. Matthews had the answer to the early question in the bottom of the first as they, too, went single-triple-single-triple (Glenn, Carl2, Carl and Jim) to tie the game.  A single by Mike T. and a triple by Jerry in the top of the second gave Christ Church a one run lead which held uo until the bottom of the seventh.  In the seventh, Frank singled and scored to tie the game on a triple by Glenn.  Christ Church had failed to add to their one run lead after a lead-off single by David in the third,  and after a lead-off single by Tom in the fifth. With the score tied in the eighth a one out triple by David failed to give Christ Church the lead.  St. Matthews took a lead in the eighth on a single by Jim and a triple by Ray.  Mike T. tripled in the ninth with two outs but died at third.   The Final - St. Matthews UMC 5 - Christ Church 4.

What A Difference A Week Makes

A week after their best output of the year (19 runs on 42 hits), Christ Church could manage only 15 hits and four runs versus St. Matthews Baptist in Room 005.

Christ Church won Game One with only four hits.  Fortunately two of those came in the sixth inning.  Andy Coates led off with a single and was followed an out later on an RBI triple by Leah Bennett.  That run held out as St. Matthews failed to score.  Tom Bennett had both the other hits for Christ Church- a pair of singles.  The Final - Christ Church 1 - St. Matthews Baptist 0.

In Game Two, Dick Lutz singled in the sixth inning.  But that was the ONLY hit of the game for Christ Church.  St. Matthews had four home runs (Kelly, Barb, David and Matt.  The Final - St. Matthews 4 - Christ Church 0.

After a single by Mike Peak to lead off the bottom of the first in Game Three, St. Matthews got on the board first with a HR by Homer in the second inning.  Christ Church answered immediately tying the game on a single by Tom and a triple by David Stierle.  A two out triple by Jerry Hinton and a lead off single by Tom failed to lead to a run.  A homer by Bill put St. Matthews up again in the fifth.  Christ Church again answered in the bottom of the inning.  Mike P. singled and Leah tied the game with a triple.  When Jerry followed with a single Christ Church took a one run lead.  This time it was St. Matthews turn to answer right back with a two run home run by Derald after a single by Jim.  Singles by Mike P. and Tom were wasted.  The Final - St. Matthews 4 - Christ Church 3.

FORTY-TWO HITS NOT ENOUGH FOR SWEEP

Despite out hitting Immanuel 42-30; despite out scoring them 19-16; and despite trailing for only one throw of a dart, Christ Church could only manage a 2-1 series win Monday night at Immanuel.

Christ Church scored in the firat inning of all three games.  In Game One, the score came on a single by Leah Bennett and a triple by Mike Thompson.  Another single and triple by Leah and Mike T. followed by a single by Tom Bennett made it 3-0 in the middle of the third.  A pair of home runs (Frank and Tanner) in the bottom of the third cut the lead to one.  Christ Church reestablished the three run lead in the fifth on a single-triple-single by Dick Lutz, Tom and David Stierle.  Tanner's second home run of the game in the fifth reduced the lead to 5-3 and a sixth inning double by Jared and a triple by John put Immanuel only a run back.  In the top of the seventh a single from Dick and a triple by David together with an eighth inning  double by Andy Coates and triple by Leah closed out the scoring for Christ Church.  Doubles by Frank and Jared in the eighth scored Immanuel's fifth and final run.  David (single), Andy (double) and Mike Peak (triple) added hits in Christ Church's fifteen hit attack.  The Final - Christ Church 7 - Immanuel 6.

In Game Two, the first inning scoring came on a single-triple-single by Mike P., Leah and Mike T.  In the second, Charles Smith homered with Andy on first after a single for a four run lead which was extended to five on a solo home run by Charles in the fourth.  David, Andy, and Mike P. (twice) added non-run scoring singles in a twelve hit game.  Immanuel could push across only three runs: a double by Jared, sacrifice by John and a single from Adam  in the fourth; a home run by Tanner in the fifth; and triple by Jim and single by Buzz in the seventh.    The Final - Christ Church 5 - Immanuel 3.

In Game Three, Christ Church took a three run lead with two in the first (single-triple-single by Leah, Mike T. and Tom) and one in the second (a pair of doubles by Charles and Bob Stone).  Homers by Bob and Adam sliced the lead to one in the thirdA double by Charles followed by a HR by Bob made the score 5-2.  Brandy's HR in the fourth followed by a fifth inning single by Mike T. and David's triple immediately followed by a two run fifth by Immanuel (Tanner- HR; Bob- double; Jared double) had the score standing at 6-5.  Dick homered in the seventh which made the score 7-5 going to the bottom of the eighth.  Up to that point in the game. Mike P. (twice) and Tom contributed singles but could not be pushed across..  Jared's homer in the eighth cut the lead to 7-6.  Leah led off the ninth with a single but three attempts to dive her in failed.  And Tanner homered in the ninth to send the game into extra innings.  In the tenth, David led off with a triple by three shots at driving him in failed.  And with two out in the ninth, Jim's home run put Christ Church behind for the first time all night and ended the game.  The Final - Immanuel 8 - Christ Church 7.

Game One was scoreless through three innings.  Dick Lutz's single was Christ Church's only hit over that span.  In the fourth, Mike Peak singled and scored on a triple by David Stierle to give Christ Church a 1-0 lead.  After Dick Lutz again died on base after a singlePortland tied the game on a home run by Jimmy.  Christ Church put the game away with three runs in the sixth, five in the seventh and three in the eighth.  In the sixth, it was single-triple-single-triple by Mike P., David, Jerry Hinton and Leah Bennett.  In the seventh Tom Bennett started things with a triple and scored on a single  by Mike P., who advanced to second on a sacrifice by David and scored when Jerry doubled.  Leah and Andy Coates followed with a triple and single to make the score 9-1.  Charles Smith led off the eighth with a home run and was followed by a single-triple-single by Tom, Mike P. and David.  Portland closed out the scoring with a run in the eighth (Sharon- double; Ron- triple) and one on the ninth (Mike E.- HR).  The Final- Christ Church 12 - Portland 3.

Christ Church took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in Game Two.  Mike P. singled, Bob Stone tripled and Jerry singled.  In the third David's three run home run after error for Jimmy and a single by Perry put Portland up by a run.  A home run by Dick in the fourth tied the game at three a piece and Tom's HR in the sixth put Christ Church in front.  Jimmy homered to tie the game in the fifth.  But Mike Thompson answered with a homer in the seventh only to have Jimmy homer again to make it a tie game at 5-5.  In the ninth with one out Mike W.'s walk-off home run ended the game and tied the series.  David and Jerry added non-run scoring triples.  The Final- Portland 6 - Christ Church 5.
