Christ Church beat Watkins memorial United Methodist Chirch two games to one Monday night in Room 005. It was Christ Church's sixth straight series win to close out the 2018 year. Christ Church will resume play on January 7, 2019.
Watkins scored in the first inning of all three games. In Game One a home run by Norm after a double by Wendell put Watkins up by a pair of runs.
Christ Church sliced the lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Don Meredith led off with a double and, with two outs, Mike Thompson doubled (RBI) for Christ Church's first run. In the fifth, Christ Church tied the game, again on a pair of doubles, a one out double by Vince Richards and a two out double (RBI) by David Stierle. Jerry Hinton homered in the sixth inning for Christ Church's first lead of the night and Mark Nethary added an insurance run in the seventh. That insurance was needed when Dave cut the lead to one with a homer to lead off the eighth but that closed the game's scoring. The Final - Christ Church 4 - Watkins 3.
Watkins again took a two run first inning lead in Game Two. Don's lead off single and Tom Bennett's triple (RBI) made it a 2-1 game and it became 2-2 in the second on a double by Vince and a two out double (RBI) by David. Back to back home runs by Norm and Jenn restored Watkins' two run lead in the third which was cut to one in the fourth on a home run by Vince. But singles by Tom in the third; Nick Peak in the fourth; and David in the seventh failed to produce any more runs. Watkins added single runs on home runs in the fifth (Dave), sixth (Gary), and eighth (Norm). The Final - Watkins 7 - Christ Church 3.
A first inning home run in Game Three by Norm and a second inning homer by Gary put Watkins up 2-0. Meanwhile, Christ Church was without a hit through four innings. In the fifth, back to back doubles by Vince and mark (RBI) made it 2-1. David singled in the sixth but was left on base. In th eighth, with Crist Church still down by a run, Mark led off with a double. After two were out Don deliverd a two out two RBI home run which turned out to be the winning runs. The Final - Christ Church 3 - Watkins 2.
Christ Church enters the Christmas/New Years break tied with St. Matthews UMC for first place, three games ahead of third place Trinity. Play resumes on January 7, 2019, at St. Matthews Baptist Church. Games at St. Matthews Baptist begin at 7:00 with practice getting underway at 6:45.
