Late Season Slump Continues

Christ Church used three home runs in Game 1 to beat Portland 3-0.  But Portland scored six runs in each of the last two games and the recent inability to score runs doomed Christ Church to loses in Game 2 (6-4) and Game 3 (6-0) and a 2-1 series loss, our fourth straight.

Going into last night's play, CCUM was five games behind St. Matthews Methodist in the loss column and our  magic number was 6.  (It was also 6 versus St. Matthews Bpt. who have two games to make up.)  With last night's two losses the magic number is now 4 less any wins last night by St. Matthews UMC.

We are off next week.

CHRIST CHURCH DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT SERIES

For the second week in a row, Christ Church needed a Game 3 win to avoid being swept for the first time this year.  We were again successful with a 5-1 victory at St. Matthews Baptist Church.  Games 1 and 2 followed a recent trend of low scoring as St. Matthews never trailed and won by scores of 5-2 and 8-1. In game 3, St. Matthews jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but CCUM scored 2 in the second and had four home runs in the win.

Christ Church entered play with a 33-30 record and trailed first place St. Matthews UMC by 3 games.  St. Matthews UMC (36-27) was off this week and so, after last night, CCUM has a record of 34-32 and we are 3-1/2 games back.  With six games left, if CCUM sweeps all six games, we will end up 40-32.  The magic number (any combination of St. Matthews wins and CCUM loses)  is 6.

St. Matt. UMC beat Christ Church 2 games to 1

Christ Church drops series to Watkins

After five straight series wins, Christ Church lost to Watkins two games to one.  In Game 1 Watkins scored four times in the first and fourth innings and added single runs in the third and fourth,  on their way to an easy 10-2 win.  Christ Church managed only 5 hits.  In Game 2 Christ Church had only four hits and failed to score for only the second time this year in dropping Game 2 by a score of 4-0.  In Game 3, Christ Church again had only four hits but two of those were home runs and those were enough to salvage a 2-1 victory.

For the night Watkins had 29 hits to Christ Church's 13; 15 runs to 4; 10 doubles to 1; 6 triples to 3 and 6 home runs to 2.

Christ Church continues streak with series wins against Harvey Brown and Crescent Hill

After a bye week on February 14th, Christ Church won their fourth and fifth series in a row.

On February 21 Christ Church defeated Harvey Browne in games 1 and 2 by scores of 2 - 1 and 4 - 2 before Harvey Browne won game 3  6-1.  The scoring in Game 1 consisted of solo home runs by Bob Stone and Mike Thompson.  Game 2 saw Christ Church scoring three different ways- a Dick Lutz single and John Frederick triple in the first inning;  Terry Waddle and Jim Schlarb doubling in the second;  a Bob Stone triple and a Mike Thompson single in the fourth; and a home run from Bob Stone in the eighth.

On February 28 Crescent Hill used a pair of home runs in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie and win Game 1 3-1.  But that was all the scoring Crescent Hill did and Christ Church used 26 hits (12 in Game 2 and 14 in Game 3) to win the last two games 6-0 and 8-0.

This puts Christ Church a season best five games above .500   Entering play on the 28th, Christ Church trailed St. Matthews Baptist by 2 games in the lost column and trailed St. Matthews Methodist by a single game in the lost column.
