St. Matthews Wins Series

In Game One Christ Church challenged St. Matthews UMC to a "home run derby' with everyone trying for only home runs in an effort to shorten the times of the games to assure getting home for the NCAA final (that is KY blue).  But St. Matthews is fighting for 2nd and 3rd place and decided to play their usual games.  CCUM's strategy produced four doubles (Frank Preston and Dick Lutz [3]); one triple (Terry Waddle); and two home runs and two  RBIs apiece for Mike Thompson  and Charles Smith.  St. Matthews scored 8 runs on 13 hits.

Christ Church abandoned the home run strategy for Game Two.  In the first John Frederick homered driving in Mike Peak from first for a 2-0 lead.  St. Matthews scored three in the bottom of the first and four in the second to take a 7-2 lead.  David Stierle singled to open the third inning, was driven in by John Frederick's triple who, in turn scored on a two run home run by Dick Lutz.  Christ Church tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh on a two out triple by David Stierle, an RBI single by Mike Peak and an RBI triple by John Frederick.  In the eighth Frank Preston doubled and was driven in by Terry Waddle's triple to give Christ Church the 8-7 victory.

In Game Three, Christ Church scored one in the first (Mike Peak single, John Frederick triple).  St. Matthews scored three in the first and four in the third for a 7-1 lead.  With game time approaching CCUM switchhed back to the home run strategy, failed to score any more runs and St. Matthews won Game Three 11-1 and the series 2 games to 1.

Next week Christ Church plays at Watkins.  This is a change from the schedule and completes the change that saw Watkins come to Christ Church on February 20.
