Portland Wins Two of Three

Portland Presbyterian won the opening series of the 2012-2013 season, two games to one in games played at Portland.

Christ Church never trailed in Game One, taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Dick Lutz singled, Bob Stone doubled and Paul Hirsbrunner drove both in with a triple.  CCUM made it 4-0 the next inning.  Harry Barsh homered and David Stierle was driven in from third by Dick Lutz's single.  A Portland home run in the seventh completed the scoring in a 4-1 win for Christ Church.  Christ Church had two other hits- Mike Peak had a single; Dick Lutz added his third single.

Christ Church could manager only one hit over the first four innings of Game Two, Mike Peak's lead-off single.  Portland scored one in the first on four consecutive no out singles; two in the second, and one in the fourth.  Mike Thompson cut the lead to 4-1 with his fourth inning home run but Portland matched that with a HR in the bottom of the inning.  David Stierle tripled and Dick Lutz singled to cut the lead to 5-2 only to see Portand add two on a HR to make it 7-2.  Home runs by Dick Lutz in the eighth and Mike Thompson in the ninth made the final 7-4.  Other hits for CCUM- Paul Hirsbrunner, single; Terry Waddle, double.

In Game Three, Christ Church led 4-0 after four and a half innings.  A David Stierle single and Bob Stone triple produced one in the first.  In the third Mike Peak singled and scored on David Stierle's triple.  In the fourth, it was Paul Hirsbrunner singling and Mike Thompson driving him in with a triple.  In the top of the fifth Dick Lutz tripled with David Stierle scoring from first.  A Portland HR made it 4-1 after five.  Mike Thompson's sixth inning HR made it 5-1.  But in the last of the seventh, Portland went single, triple, single, home run to tie the game.  After capitalizing on every hit, CCUM wasted a two out double by Dick Lutz, a lead-off single by Paul Hirsbrunner, and a one out single by Mike Peak over the last three innings and the score was tied after regulation.  Christ Church took the lead in the tenth.  Bob Stone reached on an error ans was driven in by Mike Thompson's triple.  But for Portland, with one out in the 10th, a pair of singles and a triple produced two runs and a 7-6 win in Game three and a 2-1 series win.
