St. Matthews Continues Mastery

For the fourth time this year, St. Matthews UMC won its weekly series with Christ Church.

In game One, a two run bottom of the first and a one run second staked St. Matthews to a 3-0 lead.  Singles by Mike Peak in the first and David Stierle in the fourth failed to produce any runs.  Christ Church tied the game in the sixth.  Terry Waddle led off with a home run.  Charles Smith followed with a single and was driven in by a Mike P. triple.  After two outs Paul Hirsbrunner singled to score Mike.  Bob Stone doubled in the eighth but was stranded on second.  Christ Church took their first lead of the night in the eighth.  David singled with one out and Paul delivered again with two outs with an RBI triple and a 4-3 lead.  But St. Matthews answered with the tying run in the eighth and, in the ninth, won 5-4 on a one out home run.

Christ Church jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game Two.  Mike P. singled, Paul tripled and Charles singled.  But in the bottom of the first, St. Matthews took the lead for good with four runs.  In the sixth, Paul singled and Dick Lutz tripled to cut the lead to one.  But St. Matthews had a homer in the bottom half on the inning to make the final score 5-3.  Kay Peak added a double in the fifth,  Bob Stone doubled in the seventh and singled in the ninth and David singled in the eighth.

Christ Church was able to salvage Game Three, scoring two in the first (Paul singled, Dick tripled and Charles singled) and three in the fifth (Paul singled, David tripled, Dick singled and Mike Thompson tripled).  St. Matthews cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth,  5-3 in the fifth and 5-4 in the eighth.  But a home run by David in the ninth made the final score 6-4.   Other Christ Church hits came from Paul (single), Charles (single), Mike T. (double), David (single) and Terry (double).

St. Matthews won the first. third, and last night's fourth series, all by 2-1 margins.  They won the second series 3-0 to make the record for the season 9-3.
