CHRIST CHURCH WINS PLAY-OFF

On a Monday night at Watkins when all runs were scored by solo home runs, Christ Church did it more often to beat Watkins two games to none in a best of three series and earn the second place trophy for the 2013-2014 season.  Christ Church and Watkins had tIed for second place with 34-29 records four games behind champions, St. Matthews UMC.

In Game One, playing as the visiting team  through two and a half innings, Christ Church could manage only a second inning lead-off single by Bob Stone, and a third inning error by Charles Smith who moved to second on a sacrifice by Paul Hirsbrunner.  In the bottom of the third, Watkins got their first home run with two outs to take a 1-0 lead.  Christ Church struck back an inning later when, after two outs, Tom Bennett and David Stierle homered back-to-back to put Christ Church up 2-1.  In the sixth Bob Stone made it 3-1 with a homer and David Stierle made the final 4-1 with a ninth inning home run.  Leah Bennett added a fifth inning single and Tom a sixth inning double.

Christ Church played as the home team in Game Two and took a 2-0 lead in the second on back-to-back two out homers by David and Bob.  Paul singled in the sixth but died at first.  Watkins cut the lead in half in the top of the eighth, but Christ Church immediately responded in the bottom of the inning on home runs by Leah and Paul.  Watkins managed a ninth inning homer but could only to reduce the final margin by a run and Christ Church won the night's play-off with a 4-1 Game Two win.

Christ Church Ends Season With Series Win

Entering play at home on Monday night, Christ Church stood in fourth place one game ahead of their night's opponent, Portland Presbyterian.  A Portland sweep would elevate them to fourth.  Any other result would earn Christ Church at least a tie for fourth.

Christ Church took the suspense out of a fifth place finish with a six hit, four run first inning.  Mike Peak led off the inning with a single.  Then after two were out; Paul Hirsbrunner tripled (RBI); David Stierle singled (RBI); Mike Thompson doubled; Billy Kinman singled (RBI);and  Charles Smith singled (RBI) before the third out was made.  After failing to score after another lead-off single by Mike P., Billy homered in the third to make it 5-0.  Charles reached on an error after the home run.  After hit-less innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth, Mike P. again led off with a single and scored on a 2-RBI home run by Jerry Hinton in the seventh, and added another two in the eighth when Mike T. singled and Terry Waddle homered (2 RBI) for a 9-0 Game One victory.

Christ Church jumped out to another first inning lead in Game Two, this time a 2-0 lead on a single by Mike P. and a 2-RBI home run by Paul.  In the third, Portland scored two to tie the game, but Christ Church answered on a single by Dick Lutz, a triple (RBI) by Jerry and a single (RBI) by David.  Christ Church added only two other hits, both singles by David, Billy and Dick.  Four runs turned out to not be enough as Ron Million had three triples and five RBI to give Portland a 5-4 win and even the series.

Game Three saw only nine hits, five by Christ Church and four by Portland.  Kay Peak got the first hit for Christ Church, a home run for a 1-0 lead.  Two outs later Mike P. tripled but died at third.  After Portland tied the game in the fifth.  After a two out single by Charles and a two out double by Billy, Charles made it 2-1 in the eighth with a home run, a score that  held up for the win.

For the season, Christ Church won 12 series and lost 9.  They had a winning record against three teams but a losing record against four.  They won 34 games and lost 29.  For the season, Christ Church out hit their opponents 482-378 and  out scored them 224-194.

Christ Church opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game Three.  Mike Peak led off with a single; Jerry tripled (RBI); Tom singled (RBI); and David tripled (RBI).  Frank Preston homered in the second after St. Matthews had scored one.  In the fourth with the score 3-1, Christ Church struck again.  Dick singled; Leah tripled (RBI); Mike T. singled (RBI); Paul Hirsbrunner tripled (RBI); and Jerry singled (RBI) to add four runs for a 8-1 lead.  Jerry homered in the seventh.  St. Matthews scored twice in the ninth to make the final 9-3.  David added a seventh inning triple and Leah a single in the eighth in a fourteen hit attack.
