Christ Church Avoids Sweep

Watkins Memorial took Monday night's series at Watkins two games to one.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by Jerry Hinton and an RBI triple by Paul Hirsbrunner, Christ Church failed to score the rest of the way and dropped Game One 3-1.  Paul added singles in the fourth and sixth and Dick Lutz added a single in the seventh.  Christ Church mounted a threat in the ninth when Tom Bennett and Dick both singled  with two outs, but the triple to tie the game did not come.

Christ Church managed to score four runs in Game Two but Watkins had five home runs to win 6-4.  Christ Church scored two in the first on a single by Paul, an RBI triple by Tom, and an RBI single by Dick; one in the fourth on Bob Stone's single and Mike Thompson's RBI triple; and one in the sixth when Mike T. homered.  Jerry added a double in the third and Mike T. a single in the ninth.

In Game Three, Watkins took a first inning 1-0 lead which lasted through the third.  In the fourth, Paul, Jerry and Mike T. went single, triple, single for a 2-1 lead which was extended to 4-1 in the sixth on a single, triple and single by Paul, Jerry and Mike T. once again.  Charles Smith added a double but Mike T. and Charles were left stranded.  Mike Peak led off the eighth with a single but died at first.  Leading 4-1 Leah Bennett added an insurance run with a ninth inning home run.  That run meant that the tying run never came to the plate in spite of two home runs by Watkins which cut the lead and made the final 5-3.
