CHRIST CHURCH DROPS SERIES TO WATKINS

After managing only two runs and twelve hits total in games one and two Monday night at Watkins, a fourteen hit Christ Church attack salvaged the third game.

Christ Church led through five and a half innings in Game One but that lead was a slim 1-0.  Their run came with two out in the top of the first on a single by David Stierle and a triple (RBI) by Tom Bennett.  Mike Thompson's lead off single in the second; Mike Peak's one out single in the third; and Vince Richards' one out double in the fifth, were not followed by the required second hit for a run.  Watkins tied the game in the fifth on a triple by Gene and a single by Wendell.  Watkins added two more in the eighth as Gene reached on an error and scored with Wendell on a home run.  In the ninth, Christ Church put the tying runs on second and third on a single by Andy Coates and a double by Mike T. but they could not be pushed across.  The Final - Watkins 3 - Christ Church 1.

Christ Church once again took the lead in the first inning of Game Two.  With two outs, David homered.  He was followed by Tom's single but he died at first.  Watkins took the lead in the second on a triple by Norm and a home run by Barb; expanded that lead on Keith's third inning home run; and added two more with home runs by Andrew and Gene in the fifth.  Christ Church put the lead-off men on with singles in the fourth (David), sixth (Leah Bennett) and seventh (Mike T), all to no avail.  Keith homered in the eight for the game's final run.    The Final - Watkins 6 - Christ Church 1.

Game Three was a more high scoring affair.  Christ Church sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning scoring four runs on five hits: Leah- lead-off single; Mike P- RBI triple; David- RBI single; Tom- RBI triple; and Mike T- RBI single.  Leah singled in the second but was stranded.  In the third, Andy singled and scored on a two out RBI triple by Dick Lutz.  Watkins made it 5-2 in the fifth, 5-3 in the sixth and 5-4 in the eighth.  In the fifth, Barb, singled, Andrew tripled and Dub singled.  The sixth inning run was a HR by Norm.  Wendell homered in the eighth.  Looking for an insurance run for their one run lead, Leah tripled with one out in the ninth.  Mike P drove her in with a single (RBI) and he scored on a triple (RBI) by David.  Tom followed with a single (RBI).  The insurance proved necessary as Watkins got what would have been the tying run on a home run by Andrew but fell short as a result of the Christ Church runs in the ninth.  Leah in the fourth and Tom in the fifth and seventh added singles which did not figure in the scoring.  The Final - Christ Church 8 - Watkins 5.
