Game 3 victory avoids second straight St. Matthews Sweep

After losing Games One and Two, Christ Church won Game Three 9-5 ending a five game win streak by St. Matthews UMC over Christ Church.

In Game One, St. Matthews scored two first inning runs after a scoreless top of the first by Christ Church.  That score remained until Christ Church tied it up on a Clete Thompson home run in the sixth inning and a triple and single by Jerry Hinton and David Stierle in the eight.  But Christ Church wasted a Bob Stone double in the ninth and St. Matthews scored a run with one out to win 3-2.  The hits were even at seven a piece.

In Game Two, St. Matthews again scored two in the first but this time added one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and added single runs in both the sixth and eighth innings.  Christ Church could manage only six hits and one run in the 8-1 lose.

Christ Church turned the tables in Game Three with two first inning runs.  St. Matthews scored three in the second to take the lead.  Christ Church answered in third with two more runs only to have St. Matthews tie the game in the bottom of the inning at 4-4.  In the fifth Frank Preston doubled and Terry Waddle homered to give Christ Church a 6-4 lead, cut to 6-5 by St. Matthews later that inning.  But St. Matthews could not score again and Christ Church put the game away with two in the sixth (Dick Lutz single, John Frederick RBI triple, Charles Smith RBI single) and one in the ninth (John Frederick single, Charles Smith RBI triple).  Christ Church had sixteen hits in the game to St. Matthews' nine.

For the week, Christ Church was out scored (16-12) and out hit (30-29).

Christ Church Takes Series from 1st Place St. Matthews Bpt.

Christ Church won Games Two and Three to win the series against St. Matthews Baptist two games to one.

In Game One, Christ Church could only manage six hits for the game and was scoreless until the ninth inning.  St. Matthews scored three runs in the fourth and four in the seventh for a 7-1 victory.

Game Two saw Christ Church take its first lead of the night in the first.  Mike Peak singled and scored on David Stierle's triple.  St. Matthews tied it up at 1-1 in the second inning.  In the sixth inning Christ Church scored two on a back to back single (Mike Peak), triple (David Stierle), single (Dick Lutz) for a 3-1 lead and a 3-2 victory.

In Game Three the scoring woes for both teams continued.  The game was scoreless until St. Matthews used a double and triple to go ahead 1-0 in the ninth inning.  With one out Mike Peak singled and tied the game when he scored on David Stierle's triple.  St. Matthews got a lead-off double but was unable to score in the tenth.  Charlie Smith then homered with one out in the bottom of the tenth to give Christ Church a 2-1 win and the series victory.

On a night when Christ Church out hit Crescent Hill 20 to 15, Crescent Hill won 2 of 3 one run games.

In Game One, Christ Church had nine hits to Crescent Hill's eight, but five of Crescent Hill's hits were home runs accounting for all their runs.  Christ Church scored a run with two outs in both the third and fifth innings on Dick Lutz singles.  Clete Thompson added two home runs, but Christ Church stranded five runners on first base in the 5-4 lose.

In Game Two, the teams combined for only six hits, but Crescent Hill stranded all four of their singles and an additional two runners who reached on errors.  Through eight innings, Christ Church had only one baserunner, an error in the second inning.  But in the ninth, Frank Preston got Christ Church's first hit with a one out single and, with two outs, Dick Lutz won the game (1-0) with an RBI triple..

Christ Church Takes Series From Portland

After losing the previous four series in October, Christ Church closed out the month with a 2-1 series win over Portland Presbyterian.

In Game 1, Christ Church used five home runs (Bob Stone, Mike Peak, Dick Lutz and two by Clete Thompson), two triples (Jerry Hinton and David Stierle), and a five run eight inning to win 9-2.

In Game 2, Portland Pres. took a two run lead in the first inning.  After Christ Church cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth (a Mike Peak two out triple and Charlie Smith's RBI single), Portland added a run in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-1.  Christ Church managed to take the lead with a run in the fifth on John Frederick's RBI triple and two in the sixth but failed to increase the lead and carried only a 4-3 lead into bottom of the eighth, where Portland used a one out single, triple and single to take a 5-3 lead.  Christ Church failed to score in the ninth and Portland evened the night with the win.

Game 3 saw both teams record five hits but a Dick Lutz home run and a Jerry Hinton RBI triple was enough for a 2-1 victory and the series win.

JIM SCHLARB, founder of the Christ Church Dartball team
passed away on May 18, 2011, at age 79.
