St. Matthews UMC Sweeps

Home-standing St. Matthews UMC had an answer to every question asked Monday night.

There were no questions in Game One as St. Matthews scored five times in the bottom of the first.  Russell and Glenn opened with singles and, after two were out, Jim tripled, Ralph singled and Frank homered.  Three doubles in the fourth (Doug, Russell and Glenn) and an eighth inning home run by Doug gave St. Matthews eight runs for the game.  Christ Church got its first hits and a pair of runs in the third on a single by Bob Stone, a double by Jan Waddle, and a double by Leah Bennett (2 RBI).  In the fourth Christ Church scored on a single by Tom Bennett and a triple by David StierleJan had another double in the fifth and Bob added a single in the seventh.  The Final- St. Matthews 8 - Christ Church 3.

Tom's first inning home run gave Christ Church a 1-0 lead.  But St. Matthews answered this first question of the night with two runs in the bottom of the inning (a single by Carl I, a triple by Carl II, and a single by Jim).  A single by Mike Peak and a triple by Leah tied the score in the third. St. Matthews immediately answered this question taking the lead to 4-2 (single by Glenn, triple by Carl II, single by Glenn) and stretching the lead to 5-2 on a fourth inning homer by Lou.  Jan's fifth inning home run cut into the lead but St. Matthews used three doubles in the sixth (by Ralph, Frank and Russell).  Paul Hirsbrunner contributed a pair of singles and Leah addeda triple.  The Final- St. Matthews 7 - Christ Church 3.

Christ Church asked an early question in Game Three.  Leah singled, David tripled and Paul singled for a 2-0 lead.  Glenn, Carl I and Carl II went single, triple, single to tie the score in the bottom of the first and  St. Matthews took a 3-2 lead in the third an a two out triple by Jim after a lead-off single by Russell.  Christ Church took a 5-3 lead in the third.  Tom singled, David tripled, Paul singled and Dick Lutz singled.  St. Matthews scored one in the bottom of the third (Glenn singled; Jim tripled) but, for the first time on the night Christ Church led after a full inning which lasted until the eighth when Doug homered to tie the score.  St. Matthews answered the final question with a game winning run in the eighth on a single by Glenn and a triple by Carl II.  One out singles by Mike P. in the seventh and Paul in the eighth produced no runs.  Christ Church's last chance to tie the score came on a two out triple by Mike P. but the final hit was lacking.  The Final- St. Matthews 6 - Christ Church 5.
