Game One - Christ Church v. Harvey Browne- to be played as suspended game

An error was discovered in the score card in Game One of the Christ Church series played at Harvey Browne on December 14th.

In the top of the eighth , with the score tied at 4-4, Dick single and scored on a triple by Mike T.  This made the score 5-4 in favor of Christ Church with Mike T. on third.  David then hit into a double play which left the bases empty.   The dart was removed from first base.  With two out, Tom  tripled and Andy singled for a 6-4 Christ Church lead.

However, the score-keeper failed to note that Mike T. had been doubled off and credited Christ Church with 3 runs instead of the correct two.

Harvey Browne's two runs in the ninth, rather than falling a run short, tied the Game.

Bob Fox has made a ruling as follows:

Thank you for finding the problem. This is the first time I have encountered this problem. I spent a bit of time with the MLB rules, which doesn't have much to say about official scorer errors. (Our situation is somewhat different from theirs, to be sure.) Here is what I recommend:

1. Treat the game as played so far as a suspended game. Start with the same batting order at the 10th inning. You may substitute for absent players.

Have your copy of the existing scoresheet, with the following unrelated (I think) correction made - Mike Peak scored only 1 run instead of two. Tom Bennett did not have an RBI {part of the problem).

2. Play the remainder of the game at your next meeting which is on February 22. Harvey Browne will be the home team for the partial game. Christ Church is the home team for the regular games.

I will change and re-issue the standings report for December 14 to reflect this.

I have communicated this to Bill Bliven. He is agreeable. Any questions or comments?

Bob

On February 22, before beginning the regular Harvey Browne at Christ Church series,  Christ Church will bat in the tenth inning of the suspended game with Dick to lead off, followed by Mike T., David, Tom, Andy, Charles, Frank, Leah and Mike P.   February 22nd is a fourth Monday, so we should have Jerry and Bob as pinch hitters.

CHRIST CHURCH ENTERS BREAK IN FIRST PLACE

Despite dropping two of three at Harvey Browne Monday night, Christ Church ended the first half of the season in first place.  Harvey Browne out hit Christ Church in all three games.

In Game One, a lead off single by Leah Bennett followed by a triple by Mike Peak gave Christ Church a 1-0 lead which held up until the bottom of the fourth when Jim singled and Fred tied the game with a triple.  In the fifth, Harvey Browne took a one run lead on a double (Jim) and a pair of singles (Terry and Jim).  Christ Church made it 3-2 in the sixth as Mike P. walked, Dick Lutz tripled and David Stierle singled.  Fred's home run tied the game in the bottom of the inning; Leah's HR put Christ Church back on top in the seventh only to have Harvey Browne answer with their own run as Jim and Fred singled and tripled.  Christ Church tallied three in the eighth when Dick singled, Mike Thompson tripled, Tom Bennett tripled and Andy Coates singled.  A ninth inning rally by Harvey Browne produced a pair of runs on home runs by Fred and Fred.  Christ Church also got hits from Tom and  David.  The Final - Christ Church 7 - Harvey Browne 6.

A single, triple, single by Mike P., Mike T. and David put Christ Church up in the first.  Harvey Browne scored two in the second (Tom-double; Jim- HR) and one in the third (Jim- single; Fred- triple), before Christ Church tied the game in the eighth on a triple by Andy and a single by Leah, and took a one run lead on a home run by David.  But in the ninth, Bob tripled, Jim singled and Fred triple for the win.  The Final - Harvey Browne 5 - Christ Church 4.

In Game Three, single runs by Harvey Browne in the second (HR by Fred) and third (triple by Bob and single by Terry) were matched in the fourth on back to back home runs by Tom and Andy.  Fred's eighth inning home run proved to be the game winner.  Leah added a single, Mike P. a single and triple, and David two singles in the loss.  The Final - Harvey Browne 3 - Christ Church 2.

POWER FAILURE

A lack of offense in Games One and Two cost Christ Church a series loss to Watkins Monday night in Room 005.

In Game One, Watkins scored a run in the third inning on a single by Andrew and a triple by Glen.  This was all Watkins needed as Christ Church failed to score for the second time this season.  Watkins added two in the fourth (a homer by Wendell; an error for Doug and  triple by Andrew) and two in the fifth (on back to back HRs  by Keith and Wendell),  Christ Church had four hits- two singles and a triple by David Stierle and a single by Charles Smith.  The Final - Watkins UNC 5 - Christ Church 0.

Game Two saw Watkins take the lead with a four run fourth inning.  Singles by Keith and Wendell were followed by a triple by Andrew  and a HR by Dick.  After failing to score for thirteen innings Bob Stone homered to make the score 4-1.  In the seventh David singled and scored on a triple by Bob.  But singles by Jerry Hinton in the fourth, sixth and eighth, and David and Dick Lutz in the ninth failed to produce any runs.  Bob added a ninth inning HR for Watkins.  The Final - Watkins UNC 5 - Christ Church 0.

A little of Christ Church's recent for returned in Game Three,  Dick's second inning home run gave Christ Church its first lead of the night and a single-triple-single by David, Tom and Dick gave Christ Church a 3-0 lead.  In the sixth Watkins sliced the lead to one as Gene reached on an error and Wendell homered.  Tom Bennett's homer got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning and got the other run back in the eighth on a single by David and a triple by Tom in the eighth,  Mike Peak and Andy  Coates added non-run scoring singles and Jerry added a single and triple.  The Final - Christ Church  5 - Watkins 3.

SERIES WIN

For the first time since January 24, 2011Christ Church took Monday night's series from St. Matthews UMC.

After St. Matthews took a 2-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first (Jim singled and Ray tripled) and another in the third (Carl singled and Jim tripled) of Game One, Christ Church cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth on a single by David Stierle and a triple by Tom Bennett and moved in front in the fifth when Mike Thompson reached on an error and scored on a triple by Jerry Hinton followed by a single by Mike Peak.  Christ Church added two runs in the seventh (Dick Lutz homered after a Charles Smith double); one in the eighth (Tom singled and Andy Coates tripled); and a run in the ninth (Jerry tripled and David singled).  David, Leah Bennett and Mike P. added non-run scoring singles and Mike T. added a double.  The Final  - Christ Church 7 - St, Matthews UMC 2.

After Jerry singled to lead off Game Two,  St, Matthews again took a first inning lead on a single by Glenn and a triple by Jim.  Mike P.'s fourth inning triple failed to produce a run.  In the fifth Leah singled and was driven in on a triple by Bob Stone  to tie the game at one, only to have Freddie's home run in the bottom of the inning give St. Matthews the lead again.  In the seventh (after Tom had died at first in the sixth, Mike T. and Bob doubled back to back and when Dick followed with a home run Christ Church led by two.  Tom's ninth inning single was not capitalized on but Christ Church clinched the series with the win.   The Final  - Christ Church 4 - St, Matthews UMC 2.

Christ Church fell behind 7-0 in Game Three. (Glenn and Carl- single, triple in the first; Ralph, Freddie and Glenn - triple, homer, homer in the second; Jim, Ray, Russell and Ralph- single, triple, single, triple in the third).  But Christ Church fought back in the fifth.  Tom led off with a single and Mike T. drove him in with a triple.  Dick singled to score Mike.  Andy followed with a triple, followed by a single by Bob, which was followed by a triple by Dick for a five run inning to cut the lead to 7-5.  A single by Russell and a triple by Bruce made the margin three after five.  In the sixth, Dick and Andy  produced a run with lead-off  a single and triple to move within two again.  In the bottom of the sixth St. Matthews answered with a pair of runs on a single by Jim, a triple by Ray and a single by Russell.  Christ Church tried by complete the comeback but Tom's single, Bob's triple, and Dick's single found Christ Church falling two runs short,  Leah, Bob, Jerry  and David added single.  The Final - St. Matthews UMC 10 - Christ Church 8.
