CHRIST CHURCH TAKES SERIES FROM PORTLAND

For the second week in a row, Christ Church played the league leader, this week Portland who were tied with Harvey Browne for first.  And for the second week in a row, Christ Church won the series two games to one.

In Game One, Christ Church took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Mike Peak singled and was driven in when Jerry Hinton tripled.  Portland tied it in the second and took a 3-1 lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth while Christ Church, through eight innings could add only singles by David Stierle and Dick Lutz.  But in the bottom of the ninth, with one out Bob Stone homered, driving in Jerry from first to tie the score.  After Paul Hirsbrunner and Frank Preston singled, now with two outs in the ninth, Jenny Peak tripled for a 5-3 Christ Church win.

Christ Church also fell behind in Game Two as Portland scored two in the first and one in the second for a 3-0 lead.  After wasting a single by David and a double by Kay Peak, in the fifth Christ Church cut the lead to one on a single by David and a two run home run by Terry Waddle.  In the seventh, David and Bob had back to back home runs which produced a 4-3 Christ Church game and series win.

Portland was able to avoid a sweep with a Game Three victory.  Jerry was stranded on third after a first inning triple but a triple by Terry and an RBI single by Alan Reinhardt gave Christ Church a 1-0 second inning lead.  Portland wiped that out with a two run fourth to take a 2-1 lead.  Dick Lutz had a double in the third and in the fourth, a single by Alan and a triple by Mike P. tied the Game at 2-2.  But Christ Church could only manage a pair of singles by Paul the rest of the way and a two run sixth by Portland made the final score 4-2.
