CHRIST CHURCH DROPS SERIES

Christ Church closed out the first half of the season losing two games to one to host Harvey Browne on December 12th.

In Game One, Harvey Brown led all the way after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a double and home run.  They added four runs in the sixth inning on a homer and four doubles.  Christ Church scored single runs in the third when Terry Waddle tripled and Mike Peak singled and in the eighth on a Frank Preston Home run.  The final score was 6-2.

In Game Two, again, Harvey Brown never trailed after opening up the bottom of the first with three home runs on three darts.  Mike Thompson cut the lead to 3-1 with a second inning home run but in the bottom of the inning, Harvey Browne homered twice to make the margin four.  A run on a Mike Peak single and David Stierle triple in the sixth was immediately answered with two more runs by Harvey Browne for a 7-2 lead.  Mike Thompson and Bob Stone both homered to cut the lead to 7-5 and Mike Peak (single) and Charles Smith (triple) combined to trim the deficit to two.  But a Bob Stone double in the ninth was wasted and game two ended 7-5.

In Game Three, Christ Church took their first lead of the night on Mike Thompson's first inning RBI double.  After it was tied at 1-1 in the third, Mike Thompson and Clete Thompson homered in the fourth with Clete's home run driving in Charlie Smith for a 4-1 score.  That was the end of the scoring for Christ Church.  But Harvey Browne could only muster a pair of home runs in the sixth and the final score in the victory for Christ Church was 4-3.

For the night, both teams had 22 hits but Harvey Browne's included 9 doubles, 1 triple and 10 home runs resulting in 16 runs to Christ Church's 11.

In the 12 series in the first half, Christ Church could manage only 4 wins (all 2-1) and lost 8 series ( with one being 0-3).  Christ Church's record for the first half is 15-21 and will start the second half 5 games behind fourth place Harvey Browne.

Christ Church drops series to Watkins

Christ Church dropped two one-run games to lose the December 5th series against Watkins, two games to one.

In Game One Christ Church could manage only three hits and scored only one run on a Clete Thompson home run in losing 2-1.

Game 3 victory avoids second straight St. Matthews Sweep

After losing Games One and Two, Christ Church won Game Three 9-5 ending a five game win streak by St. Matthews UMC over Christ Church.

In Game One, St. Matthews scored two first inning runs after a scoreless top of the first by Christ Church.  That score remained until Christ Church tied it up on a Clete Thompson home run in the sixth inning and a triple and single by Jerry Hinton and David Stierle in the eight.  But Christ Church wasted a Bob Stone double in the ninth and St. Matthews scored a run with one out to win 3-2.  The hits were even at seven a piece.

In Game Two, St. Matthews again scored two in the first but this time added one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and added single runs in both the sixth and eighth innings.  Christ Church could manage only six hits and one run in the 8-1 lose.

Christ Church turned the tables in Game Three with two first inning runs.  St. Matthews scored three in the second to take the lead.  Christ Church answered in third with two more runs only to have St. Matthews tie the game in the bottom of the inning at 4-4.  In the fifth Frank Preston doubled and Terry Waddle homered to give Christ Church a 6-4 lead, cut to 6-5 by St. Matthews later that inning.  But St. Matthews could not score again and Christ Church put the game away with two in the sixth (Dick Lutz single, John Frederick RBI triple, Charles Smith RBI single) and one in the ninth (John Frederick single, Charles Smith RBI triple).  Christ Church had sixteen hits in the game to St. Matthews' nine.

For the week, Christ Church was out scored (16-12) and out hit (30-29).

Clete Thompson 2 Out, 2 Run Homer in 12th Inning Gives CCUM 10-9 Victory in Game 3 and Series Win

In a series marked by hitting streaks by both teams, Christ Church took the opening series of the 2011-2012 season by defeating Portland Presbyterian Church 2 games to 1.

In game One Portland opened the 7th inning with three straight doubles and, after two were out, added a triple, a single and another triple and won the game 7 to 5.

In Game Two, Portland opened the game going single, single, triple, single to take a 3-0 lead before there was an out.  But Christ Church, down by a run, matched that with four straight two out doubles in the 7th  to score three in to win 6-4.

Game Three went back and forth.  At the end of one, it was Christ Church 2. Portland 0.  Portland scored 3 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd to lead 4 to 2 after two and a half innings.  Christ Church tied it with a run in the bottom of the 3rd and another in the 4th.  Single runs in the 5th and 6th gave Portland the lead back which they held until the bottom of the 7th when Christ Church scored three for a 7 to 6 lead.  Portland scored one in both the 8th and 9th innings to take one run lead.  But Christ Church tied it in the bottom of the 9th to send it to extra innings. After scoreless 10th and 11th innings, Portland scored 1 in the top of the 12th for a 9-8 lead.  But after two were out in the bottom of the inning, Terry Waddle kept the game alive with a double and Cletus Thompson ended the game with his two run home run for a 10-9 victory.

HARVEY BROWNE USES 18 HOME RUNS TO WIN SERIES

Harvey Browne scored 11 runs on only 10 hits (plus an error), 9 of those hits being home runs, to beat Christ Church 11-4 in Game 1.  In Game 2, 7 home runs and 8 doubles produced 13 runs and a 13-6 victory.

Facing a series sweep and a 2-1 deficit going into the bottom of the ninth inning we scored two runs, tying the game on a single and an RBI triple, and then, after an out, taking the victory with an RBI single.

For the season, we split our series (6 WINS AND 6 LOSES) with Harvey Browne, Crescent Hill, St. Matthews Baptist, and Portland.  We beat St. Matthews UMC 7 games to 5, but lost to Watkins also 7-5 for a 36 and 36 record.

St. Matthews went into play last night with a magic number of 1 and three games left.  Second place St. Matthews Baptist had five games remaining and needed a sweep of all five to keep their chances alive.

CCUM will finish in third place unless  St. Matthews Baptist were to lose ALL five of their remaining games.

Late Season Slump Continues

Christ Church used three home runs in Game 1 to beat Portland 3-0.  But Portland scored six runs in each of the last two games and the recent inability to score runs doomed Christ Church to loses in Game 2 (6-4) and Game 3 (6-0) and a 2-1 series loss, our fourth straight.

Going into last night's play, CCUM was five games behind St. Matthews Methodist in the loss column and our  magic number was 6.  (It was also 6 versus St. Matthews Bpt. who have two games to make up.)  With last night's two losses the magic number is now 4 less any wins last night by St. Matthews UMC.

We are off next week.

CHRIST CHURCH DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT SERIES

For the second week in a row, Christ Church needed a Game 3 win to avoid being swept for the first time this year.  We were again successful with a 5-1 victory at St. Matthews Baptist Church.  Games 1 and 2 followed a recent trend of low scoring as St. Matthews never trailed and won by scores of 5-2 and 8-1. In game 3, St. Matthews jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but CCUM scored 2 in the second and had four home runs in the win.

Christ Church entered play with a 33-30 record and trailed first place St. Matthews UMC by 3 games.  St. Matthews UMC (36-27) was off this week and so, after last night, CCUM has a record of 34-32 and we are 3-1/2 games back.  With six games left, if CCUM sweeps all six games, we will end up 40-32.  The magic number (any combination of St. Matthews wins and CCUM loses)  is 6.

On February 21 Christ Church defeated Harvey Browne in games 1 and 2 by scores of 2 - 1 and 4 - 2 before Harvey Browne won game 3  6-1.  The scoring in Game 1 consisted of solo home runs by Bob Stone and Mike Thompson.  Game 2 saw Christ Church scoring three different ways- a Dick Lutz single and John Frederick triple in the first inning;  Terry Waddle and Jim Schlarb doubling in the second;  a Bob Stone triple and a Mike Thompson single in the fourth; and a home run from Bob Stone in the eighth.
