Cletus Thompson Passes Away

He was retired Senior Vice President of Underwriting for Kentucky Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company. He was born in Paducah, KY and graduated salutatorian from Reidland High School. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War, Mason and member of the Scottish Rite, member of the Honorary Order of the Kentucky Colonels, volunteer for Wesley House and enjoyed playing dartball. He was faithful and active in his church, Christ Church United Methodist. He loved life and most of all his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Curtis and Effie Mae Thompson.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Amanda Jane Michael Thompson; his daughter, Susan Elizabeth Gault, Lexington, KY; his son, Michael James Thompson; his sister, Helen Louise Jones; Paducah; his adored granddaughter, Amanda Elizabeth Gault (who was the apple of his eye), Lexington; niece, Marcia Gleeson (Bobby), Paducah; and nephew, Darrell Jones (Sherry), Paducah.
He was loved by everyone and touched so many hearts. He was a true blessing on this earth and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Christ Church United Methodist, 4614 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville. Visitation: 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Pearson's , 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville.

Christ Church Sweeps Harvey Browne
Christ Church used a huge Game One second inning as inspiration for a 3-0 series sweep of visiting Harvey Browne. With CCUM trailing 2-0, Paul Hirsbrunner led off the bottom of the second with a single. Bob Stone followed with an RBI triple to cut the margin to 2-1. The Peaks- Kay, Jenny and Mike- then followed with a home run, a double and a triple to run the score to 4-1. David Stierle's single scored Mike P. and the score after two had CCUM up 5-2. A fourth inning Harvey Browne two run homer cut the lead to 5-4. In the seventh, CCUM added an insurance run. David singled and Paul tripled. The insurance was needed when Nancy Hilbert had her third homer of the game for Harvey Browne but it was not enough as Christ Church won 6-5. Other hits for CCUM- David and Frank Preston (singles); Mike Thompson and Kay (doubles).
In Game Two, Mike P. led off with a single but CCUM could not drive him in. In the second Paul led off with a single and, two outs later, Frank homered for a 2-0 lead. Harvey Browne made it 2-1 in the fourth. CCUM got that run back in the fifth. Jenny Peak tripled and Mike P. drove her in with a single. In the seventh, Bob doubled and was driven in by Jenny's second triple. A pair of Harvey Browne homers cut the lead to 4-3. In the eighth, David tripled and was driven in when Paul singled for a final score of 5-3.
CCUM completed the sweep with a 5-0 Game Three win. In the first Mike P. singled; Dick Lutz tripled, David singled; and Paul tripled. After one, CCUM led 3-0. CCUM added a run in the third on a single by David and triple by Bob. CCUM closed the scoring out in the seventh. Jenny singled and Mike P. tripled.
For the night CCUM:
**had a five run inning and a three run inning;

**out scored them 16 -8;
**had 4 doubles to 2;
**had 10 triples to 3;
**was out homered 5-2.
Christ Church enters the break with a 23-19 record. This is the first time CCUM had been four games over .500 this season.

Christ Church Wins Series
On a night when neither team played well and either team could have won three or lost three, Christ Church did just enough to win the night's series against Watkins UMC two games to one.
In Game One, neither team had a hit through five and a half innings, except for a first inning single by David Stierle. In the bottom of the second, Watkins homered twice to take a 2-0 lead. Christ Church's second hit came on Mike Thompson's double in the seventh. In the ninth, Christ Church tied the game. Down to their last out, Mike T. singled and David followed with a home run to tie the game. But in the bottom of the inning, Watkins got their third hit in the game, their third home run and they pulled out a 3-2 win.

Schedule Change in 2013
St. Matthews UMC has agreed to accommodate Christ Church in a schedule change. Because our building will be closed on the day after Easter, April 1, 2013, we will play at St. Matthews UMC that evening. Therefore, we will host St. Matthews on February 11th.

Christ Church Drops Series
St. Matthews UMC beat home-standing Christ Church two games to one. St. Matthews improved their season record against CCUM to 5-1.
St. Matthews put Game One away early. In the first inning, three straight one out hits produced two runs. And in the second, six straight hits- a homer, three singles, a triple and a final single- plated five runs and a 7-0 lead which was stretched to 8-0 in the third. CCUM's first hit was a Mike Peak single in the fourth. In the fifth, David Stierle singled, Paul Hirsbrunner tripled and Frank Preston doubled for two runs. In the ninth, trailing by six, CCUM loaded the bases on singles by Mike P., David and Paul but all were stranded and the final score in St. Matthew's win was 8-2.

St. Matthews retook the lead with another run in the fifth. CCUM took their first lead of the night in the sixth. David added another single and Dick had a triple.

St. Matthews Baptist Takes Series
A four run Game Three first inning propelled home standing St. Matthews Baptist to a 2-1 series win Monday night.
Christ Church could manage only one run in Game One. When David Stierle was stranded after his two out single, St. Matthews homered to rake a 1-0 lead. Christ Church tied the game in the top of the second when Jenny Peak's two out triple scored Dick Lutz who singled leading off the inning. But St. Matthews added a second inning solo home run and a fourth inning two run homer for a 4-1 final score. Christ wasted Dick's fourth inning single, Mike Peak's eighth inning single and singles by Dick and Bob Stone in the ninth

Mike P. added a single, Dick a pair of singles and Bob a sacrifice in the 5-2 victory.

In the ninth with no outs, David singled and Bob tripled to cut the laed to one, but the threat ended there and St. Matthews won the game and the series.

CHRIST CHURCH SWEEPS
Christ Church swept Immanuel UCC Monday night to improve to 16 -14 on the season. It was CCUM's fourth straight series win and their first sweep of the season.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning of Game One, a two run sixth inning and an eighth inning run gave CCUM a 3-1 win. David Stierle led off with a single but was stranded there. That was CCUM's only hit until the sixth. With one out, Frank Preston reached on an error. After a second out, Dick Lutz tied the game by driving in Frank with a triple. CCUM took the lead a batter later when Mike Thompson scored Dick with a single. The last run was scored on David's home run in the eighth. CCUM out-hit Immanuel 4-3 and CCUM was able to score their one error.
CCUM never trailed in Game Two. David again led off the game with a single but this time scored when Mike Peak hit a two out triple. The lead increased to 3-0 on a one out single by David and a two out home run by Mike T. CCUM added two more hits (a single by Mike P. and a double by Frank) for a total of six but no more runs. But Immanuel could muster only three hits and no runs.

Christ Church Wins Series
In the closest three game series of the season, Christ Church won in extra innings twice to pull out a 2-1 series win at Crescent Hill Baptist Church Monday night. All three games saw the winning run scored in the last inning.
In Game One, with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, Tom Sherwood's home run gave Crescent Hill the victory. Christ Church started fast with two runs in the first on a single by Dick Lutz, a triple by David Stierle and a double by Bob Stone. With the score at 2-1, Christ Church added two in the sixth on back-to-back homers by Mike Thompson and Paul Hirsbrunner. A solo home run and a two run homer in the Crescent Hill half of the eighth inning tied the score at four. Christ wasted a one out single by David Stierle in the third; a two out single by Jenny Peak in the seventh; and, in the eighth, a lead-off single by David and an error by Mike T.; setting up Crescent Hill's walk-off win.
Game Two also came down to the last inning, but this time it was the twelfth inning. With a 2-2 tie Kay Peak homered with one out to give Christ Church the lead and David added an insurance run with a homer. Christ Church out hit Crescent Hill twelve to four. Christ led 1-0 after scoring a run in the sixth on a lead off single by Dick Lutz and a two out triple by Mike Peak. In the ninth, Christ made it 2-0 on Mike P's single and Paul's triple. But a two run homer in the bottom of the inning sent the game into extra innings. A one out single by Dick in the tenth and a lead-off single by Mike P in the eleventh produced nothing. But in the twelfth with one out, Kay Peak homered and, one out later, David homered for a 4-2 win. Dick had three hits, adding a triple in the third. David added a single in the eighth; Mike P. had five hits in the game including singles in the second and fourth.
Game Three completed the extra inning series win for Christ Church. Christ went into the ninth trailing 1-0. David singled in the first and sixth but was stranded. CHRIST CHURCH TAKES SERIES FROM PORTLAND
For the second week in a row, Christ Church played the league leader, this week Portland who were tied with Harvey Browne for first. And for the second week in a row, Christ Church won the series two games to one.
In Game One, Christ Church took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Mike Peak singled and was driven in when Jerry Hinton tripled. Portland tied it in the second and took a 3-1 lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth while Christ Church, through eight innings could add only singles by David Stierle and Dick Lutz. But in the bottom of the ninth, with one out Bob Stone homered, driving in Jerry from first to tie the score. After Paul Hirsbrunner and Frank Preston singled, now with two outs in the ninth, Jenny Peak tripled for a 5-3 Christ Church win.
Christ Church also fell behind in Game Two as Portland scored two in the first and one in the second for a 3-0 lead. CHRIST CHURCH PLAYS LEAGUE LEADERS
Trailing league leading Harvey Browne by five games entering Monday night's play, visiting Christ Church need a good result.

Watkins Wins Series
Christ Church hosted Watkins Monday night in Room 005.
Neither team scored in Game One until Watkins had home runs in the fourth and seventh innings to take a 2-0 lead. Christ Church took the lead with a three run bottom of the seventh. Jerry Hinton tripled and scored on Paul Hirsbrunner's single. Jenny Peak then homered to score herself and Paul. With the score still 3-2 going into the ninth, Watkins tied the game with a lead-off home run. There was no scoring in the tenth and the top of the eleventh. In the bottom of the eleventh, Dick Lutz led off with a triple and, one out later, Jerry Hinton singled to give Christ Church the 4-3 win. Other Christ Church hits came from Harry Barsh (triple), David Stierle (single), Dick Lutz (single), and Virginia Schlarb (double).
Watkins won Game Two 5-2. Frank Preston gave Christ Church a 1-0 lead with a second inning home run, but Watkins scored two in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to lead 5-1. ST. MATT. UMC SWEEPS
St. Matthews UMC swept visiting Christ Church Monday night. Christ Church took first inning leads in each of the first two games.
In Game One Dick Lutz singled and scored in front of Mike Thompson's home run. Paul Hirsbrunner followed with a single but was stranded on first. St. Matthews tied it in the bottom of the inning, stranding two runners of their own. After St. Matthews added a run in the second, Christ Church wasted Bob Stone's fourth inning double before St. Matthews made it 5-2 after five innings. In the sixth, Christ Church cut the lead to 5-4 when Dick Lutz singled and scored on David Stierle's triple and Mike T. drove David home with a single. But Christ Church could manage only one more hit (Dick singled in the eighth) and the final score was 6-4.
Game Two also opened with a two run first for Christ Church-- Mike Peak singled, David tripled and Paul singled. In the third inning with no outs, a back to back single by Mike P. and a triple by David made the score 3-0, but David was left at third,. But St. Matthews stormed back with three straight singles followed by a triple to tie the score. Christ Church retook the lead in the fifth. With no outs, Mike P. singled for the third time and scored on Dick's triple. David drove Dick in with a single for a 5-3 lead. After a seventh inning St. Matthews' home run made it 5-4, Christ Church answered with a run in the eighth. Kay Peak tripled and scored on Jenny Peak's single. St. Matthews cut the lead to 6-5 with a run in the eighth and in the ninth with a runner on first and two outs, went triple single for a 7-6 victory. Christ Church Plays Defending Champs
Christ Church played the defending League Champs, St. Matthews Baptist Church, at Christ Church Monday night.
Christ Church won Game One 5-4. A single and home run gave St. Matthews a lead in the top of the first. Bob Stone homered in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Christ Church took the lead in the third when Dick Lutz singled and scored on Mike Peak's triple. Paul Hirsbrunner drove Mike in with a single and he scored on Mike Thompson's triple. The scoring closed on Terry Waddle's double and after three Christ Church led 5-1. St. Matthews Baptist scored two in the sixth to make the score 5-4, which turned out to be the final in Christ Church's Game One victory. Other hits for Christ Church were Kay Peak's double, and singles by Jenny Peak and Paul a(his second single of the game).

Then with two outs, Kay doubled and the next batter, Dick had his fourth hit of the game, this time a two run, game winning home run to give Christ Church the game 6-5 and a 2-1 series win.

Christ Church Falls To Immanuel
Christ Church started strong Monday at Immanuel when Mike Peak and Dick Lutz led off with a single and triple to score a run. Later in the inning, Jerry Hinton added a single to drive in Dick for a 2-0 lead. But Christ Church added only four more hits (Paul Hirsbrunner- single; Jerry Hinton- triple; Dick Lutz- single; and David Stierle- single) and Immanuel had only four hits total and Christ Church took Game One victory by that score.
In Game Two, Christ Church led 1-0 after two (Bob Stone homered); 4-0 after two and a half (Jenny Peak and Mike Thompson had home runs, and Jerry tripled and scored on David's single); 5-3 after four and a half (Dick scored after a single on Jerry's triple). CHRIST CHURCH WINS SERIES
After dropping Game One to Crescent Hill Baptist Church, a Game Two bottom of the ninth rally sparked by Kay Peak's one out triple, led to a 2-1 series win by Christ Church.
In Game One, an error and a home run gave Crescent Hill a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. A lead off Mike Peak single and Dick Lutz RBI triple cut the lead in half, but Christ Church could not get the single to score Dick. Christ Church then went hitless until Terry Waddle's lead-off homer in the fifth inning. By that time, Crescent Hill had added three more runs (on two homers) and the score was 5-2. One out singles by Dick in the sixth and eighth and a lead-off single by David Stierle in the seventh produced no runs while Crescent Hill added a run on a homer in the sixth to make it 6-2. Kay's home run in the eighth made the final score 6-3.

Portland Wins Two of Three
Portland Presbyterian won the opening series of the 2012-2013 season, two games to one in games played at Portland.
Christ Church never trailed in Game One, taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Dick Lutz singled, Bob Stone doubled and Paul Hirsbrunner drove both in with a triple. CCUM made it 4-0 the next inning. Harry Barsh homered and David Stierle was driven in from third by Dick Lutz's single. A Portland home run in the seventh completed the scoring in a 4-1 win for Christ Church. Christ Church had two other hits- Mike Peak had a single; Dick Lutz added his third single.

Christ Church Sweeps Harvey Browne
Christ Church out-hit Harvey Browne 31 to 11 to earn a sweep of the final series of the year.
In Game One, after Christ Church fell behind 1-0 in the third inning, a two run fourth and a four run sixth gave Christ Church a 6-1 win. In the fourth, a Charles Smith home run drove in Jerry Hinton (triple). In the sixth, Jerry Hinton tripled and was driven in by David Stierle's single, and he and Frank Preston scored on Clete Thompson's home run.
Harvey Browne went hitless in Game Two and Christ Church won 5-0 with a run in the third (Mike Peak single, Bob Stone triple), a run in the fifth (Frank Preston double, John Frederick triple), a run in the seventh (Clete Thompson homered), and two runs in the eighth (Jerry Hinton triple, Mike Thompson single, David Stierle triple).

Watkins Wins Series
For the second week in a row, Christ Church used a strong Game Two to avoid a series sweep.
In Game One, Christ Church's only score came on a Bob Stone home run in the second inning after Watkins had taken a 3-0 lead, Watkins added two more runs for a 5-1 victory. In Game Three, Christ Church matched Watkins single runs in the third and the fourth with a Terry Waddle double and a David Stierle triple in the third and Mike Thompson's home run in the fourth. But that finished the scoring for Christ Church and Watkins added two in the sixth for a 4-2 final.

St. Matthews Wins Series
In Game One Christ Church challenged St. Matthews UMC to a "home run derby' with everyone trying for only home runs in an effort to shorten the times of the games to assure getting home for the NCAA final (that is KY blue). But St. Matthews is fighting for 2nd and 3rd place and decided to play their usual games. CCUM's strategy produced four doubles (Frank Preston and Dick Lutz [3]); one triple (Terry Waddle); and two home runs and two RBIs apiece for Mike Thompson and Charles Smith. St. Matthews scored 8 runs on 13 hits.
Christ Church abandoned the home run strategy for Game Two. In the first John Frederick homered driving in Mike Peak from first for a 2-0 lead. St. Matthews scored three in the bottom of the first and four in the second to take a 7-2 lead. St. Matthews Baptist Clinches Title with Series Win
St. Matthews Baptist beat Christ Church two games to one and, in the process clinched the Championship of the Crescent Hill Dartball League.
In Game One, Christ Church took an early 1-0 lead when Mike Peak drove in Jerry Hinton from first with a triple with no outs. But Christ Church stranded the runner at third. St. Matthews tied it in the second. Christ Church took a 3-1 lead with a run in the fourth (Mike Thompson homered) and a run in the fifth (Harry Barsh singled and Jerry Hinton drove him in with a triple. But that completed the the scoring for Christ Church and St. Matthews scored two in the sixth, two in the eighth and one in the ninth for a 6-3 win.
Game Two saw St. Matthews score eleven runs on thirteen hits. Christ Church had ten hits but could manage only a single run in the first and lost 11-1.

St. Matthews Baptist Clinches tie for Championship
St. Matthews Baptist clinched a tie for the Championship Monday night. If Watkins UMC, with 12 games remaining, can win all their remaining games they will finish the season with a 44-28 record. If St. Matthews, with 9 games remaining, loses all their remaining games they will finish the season with an identical 44-28 record.
A single win by St. Matthews or a single loss Watkins will earn St. Matthews the crown.
The remaining five teams have been eliminated.

Christ Church Earns Sweep
Although both teams had trouble scoring, Christ Church did enough to earn a three game sweep of Crescent Hill Baptist Church on Monday night.
In Game One, Mike Peak (single) and Dick Lutz (RBI triple) opened the scoring for Christ Church in the bottom of the first . Mike Thompson homered in the third to give Christ Church a 2-0 lead which stood up for a 2-1 win.
In Game Two, Dick Lutz singled and Charlie Smith tripled for a 1-0 second inning lead and Christ Church broke the game open an inning later when John Frederick singled, David Stierle tripled, Mike Thompson singled and Charles Smith tripled to make the lead 4-0. Crescent Hill cut the lead to 4-1 in the fifth but Christ Church matched that run with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning (David Stierle singled and Dick Lutz tripled). A Crescent Hill run in the sixth made the final in Game Two4-2.

13 Run Game Three Earns Portland Series Win
Portland Presbyterian used a 17 hit, 7 home run, 13 run Game Three and won the series against Christ Church two games to one. Christ Church won Game One to avoid a sweep. The games were the first played at home for Portland since their fire two years ago!
Portland failed to score in Game One. Christ Church opened its scoring in the third inning when Mike Peak drove in Mike Thompson from second with a home run. A David Stierle triple and a Frank Preston double added a run in the fourth. Christ Church finished the scoring in the sixth when Dick Lutz singled and Charlie Smith, Frank Preston and Audrey Grant added consecutive RBI triples. The final was 6-0.
In game Two, Portland broke out on top with a run in the bottom of the first. Christ Church tied the score in the third when Mike Thompson homered. Portland took a 4-1 lead with a two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Christ Church cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth. Audrey Grant tripled and Mike Peak homered. In the sixth, Dick Lutz's single and David Stierle's triple tied the game. In the eighth, Charlie Smith and David Stierle homered to give Christ Church a 6-4 lead. But the lead was very temporary as Portland opened the bottom of the eighth with three straight home runs and won 7-6.

Christ Church Wins Series
Entering the night hoping to climb out of a last place tie and facing a second place team trying to cut into a seven game deficit, Christ Church had its best offensive output since week one to beat Harvey Browne Presbyterian two games to one.
Game One was never in doubt as Harvey Browne could manage only one hit. Christ Church scored 1 in the first, 2 in the third, and 4 in the fourth in a 7-0 victory. Mike Peak had three hits, including a triple, and scored a run. Jerry Hinton had two hits, including a triple, scored two runs and drove in two. Mike Thompson had a two run home run. David Stierle had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two. Frank Preston had a home run and Terry Waddle tripled and scored a run.

National Public Radio's "Only A Game" will feature the Christ Church Dartball team as part of a story on dartball this Saturday, February 25th. The show airs on WFPL, 89.3 FM, at 7:00 AM. St. Matthews cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth, but Christ Church answered with with a two run home by Terry Waddle driving in Dick Lutz from first for a 5-2 final.
In Game Two, Christ Church scored two runs in the first inning. Mike Peak singled, Mike Thompson tripled and John Frederick singled. After St. Matthews tied it with runs in the third and seventh innings, the score remained tied until, with one out in the ninth, Clete Thompson homered to give Christ Church a 3-2 win and the series victory.
Christ Church's only score in Game Three was a solo home run by Bob Stone in the fifth inning but St. Matthews scored one run in the first, one run in the third, and added two in the sixth inning for a 4-1 win.

St. Matthews Baptist sweeps Christ Church
St. Matthews Baptist Church used a pair of come from behind victories to sweep Christ Church Monday night.
In Game One, Frank Preston homered in the second inning to give Christ Church an early 1-0 lead. St. Matthews took the lead with three runs in the fourth, with CCUM tying the score at 3-3 on a Dick Lutz single, a Mike Peak triple and a Bob Stone single. St. Matthews regained the lead in the bottom of the inning and it was tied after seven and a half innings on Bob Stone's home run. Christ Church took a two run lead in the ninth on Frank Preston's second HR of the game and Audrey Grant's triple and Dick Lutz's single. But in the bottom of the ninth, St. Matthews led off with a home run followed by an out, then a double, another out and a game tying double climaxed by a game winning two out, two run home run and an 8-6 win.
In Game Two, Christ Church scored one in the third (Mike Peak tripled and Charlie Smith singled) and one in the fifth (Audrey Grant doubled and Mike Peak tripled) to take a 2-1 lead. But a two run seventh inning gave St. Matthews a 3-2 victory.

CHRIST CHURCH SLIDE CONTINUES
Christ Church dropped two of three to Crescent Hill Baptist Church and lost their fifth straight series.
In Game One, Christ Church wasted 10 hits and scored only on Frank Preston's seventh inning solo home run and lost 2-1 .Christ Church had two men on and no outs in the second and fourth inning, had two men on and one out in the fifth and had one man on and no outs in the seventh (after Frank's HR) and eighth without driving in any of those runners.

CHRIST CHURCH LOSES FOURTH STRAIGHT SERIES
Portland Presbyterian beat Christ Church two games to one on Monday Night. Christ Church dropped their fourth straight series.
In Game One both teams had six hits and Christ Church took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a Bob Stone home run. But in the ninth, Portland homered twice, one with a man on base, to win 3-1.
